What mental image does this conjure up? Was the candidate lethargic? Were they nodding off in the interview? Did they fail to do back-flips through the conference room door, handing out resumes as we instructed them? Did they fail to “stick” the landing?
Usually this feedback comes from Hiring Managers who were not prepared to begin interviewing in the first place. They were simply hoping “the perfect” candidate would just walk through the door. When that didn’t happen, they shut down and failed to make a connection. It’s not because the candidate “lacked energy”, it’s because the manager really didn’t know what they were looking for in the first place.
This feedback has less to do with the candidate than the Hiring Manager. When a Hiring Manager understands the key objectives of the role and understands the requisite skills necessary to succeed, they provide in depth feedback (good or bad).
So, just in case you are lacking in a few fundamental job skills, practice your “floor routine”. The feedback is bound to be more positive!
What is your definition of “Energy” and how does this factor into your hiring decisions?
